We were liars by E. Lockhart

I read this book after a friend suggested it to me and when i read the first page I was intrigued.
We are the Sinclairs.
No one is needy.
No one is wrong.
I mean wow, I wanted to know who those people were and why they were so self-centered. I was hooked!

From the start I felt the power of those words and raw emotions overwhelmed me as Cadence seemed to be in a very difficult emotional state. The way the book is written is magnetizing. Short sentences, highlighting only the important stuff, the things that affected Cadence and her family. But at some point it bothered me a little. I wanted to know a little more. I left like her mind was restricted same as her life and I had the urge to shout at her to tell me more.

What I really really loved is the usage of fairy tales in the story. It was absolutely magnificent, very witty and amazing! Cadence tells us stories in order to describe situations about her family and I found myself asking for more. I will surely go back and read some of those stories. I pay my respects to E. Lockhart for that.

There were moments while reading the book, where I felt that the author was summarizing things in order to get to the good stuff. A big chunk of the book felt like telling to me and even if was powerful and emotional, I couldn't shake the thought that someone is telling me all this. When do I get to see things happen? When I get to connect with Cadence because I felt bad for her, I cared for her but I didn't connect. She kept me away by not letting me inside her head.

As the story goes on, Cadence has an accident and since then we try to find out what happened to her. I couldn't figure it out which was another reason I liked this book. I didn't see it coming, I had no clue! At the revelation moment though I was a little stunned. Again she tells us what happened instead of letting us see it. So, I liked that she threw that into our faces, but I'd love to have seen it.

Have you read it? Any thoughts?

Have a great week and a beautiful month!

  1. I really like this book! I felt confused half the time and a little nervous because it seemed like something ominous was going to happen. If it weren't for that major plot twist, I don't think I would have liked it as much. I gave it a whole star more because of the big reveal. Awesome review!

  2. Very good review Athina! I'm glad you appreciated the haunting beauty of those short sentences. I'm in love with these kind of phrases, small, to the point and strong! I'm also glad I wasn't the only one who didn't see the end coming!

  3. I really enjoyed this book. I guessed part of the twist early on, but not the rest, so it kept me gripped throughout. The writing style was superb too.
