Think Out Loud: Ghosts?

This is Think out Loud. It’s a weekly meme created to help bloggers break out from the blogging bubble. The rules are simple. We post whatever we want and let people know what’s in our mind. Visit the creator on Thinks Books and join too. It’s so cool to share your random thoughts.

My grandma’s house was always a spooky place. Even if I used to spend months there, the feeling that something lurked in the shadows, refused to go away. I remember hearing noises, like someone was knocking on the window and the light tap on the floor as if someone was playing with a ball.

But what frightened me the most, was the feeling. The sense that I was not alone, even when I knew no one else was in the house. Like someone was watching me, monitoring my actions, waiting.

And then, my grandmother died and I was devastated. Her house lost its color, became cold, unfamiliar and the sense of the unknown grew bigger. I remember looking around and seeing her in the kitchen, looking at me, smiling. I still don’t know if it was a dream or if I actually saw her that day, but this image had stuck in my head. But I wasn’t frightened. For the first time in that house I felt joy.

And then, the spookiest thing happened.

It was after midnight and I was sleeping with my sister in my uncle’s room, when I heard the dogs barking. But not like they used to do. They barked so hard and loud, like I’ve never heard them before.

“Do you hear them?” My sister asked, lifting her head from the duvet.
“Yeah, go back to sleep.” I urged her since I really wanted to sleep.

And then the barking stopped and everything was quiet. Dead silence.

That was the moment we heard the steps.

Three heavy steps like walking up the stairs, and then iron creaked, as if someone opened the door outside.

“Did you hear that?” Sis, asked me panicked.
“Yeah, it’s grandpa,” I mumbled in my sleep.

I heard her getting off the bed walking toward the living room. I heard the curtain’s thrust and then she was back in the room.

“No, he wasn’t,” she said as she lied down. “I checked. No one came in and no one is outside.”

I didn’t answer. Sleep’s sweet dizziness had already consumed me, but upon waking the next morning, I felt a chill running down my spine. Because I knew. What we heard last night, was what grandma used to tell us. The stories she recounted and nobody believed her. We heard her grandfather’s restless soul seeking revenge for the man who took his life.

How about you? What are you thinking out loud today?
By the way, do you like the pumpkin in my pic? :)

Happy Halloween.

  1. I totally love the pumpkin! That's awesome. Your story is spooky, the steps, the creaking gate, the revenge seeking ghost. I can't believe your grandma had the same story but no one believed her.

After my grandma died the house died with her. It was always painted white, but for the first time it looked bleached but not clean. The swing looked all wrong because none of us kids would ever be scolded about swinging too hard. I haven't been inside since she hobbled around, turning the heat up way too much and tinkering on every little fix it project. There is no one like our grandmas. Happy Halloween, Athina. Here's to ghost stories!

But that story! That was freaky and awesome. Sure I'll be scared as heck but I'm just so fascinated by the story and its history I just want to read more.

Thank you for sharing this story and about your grandma.
