Books being books

Have you ever felt that a book sounds too much like a book?

I mean, have you ever felt like you're inside the author's mind while he tries to create that book? As if somehow you can see him sit in front of the PC, squeezing out the words. Imagining him taping the keyboards, while his mind is racing, as he tries to connect the dots of the story he is writing. Have you ever felt that?

Well, this is not good.

Lately while reading some books, I started to spot the parts where the author says something only to remind us what happened before. But the thing is that those parts do not fit in the story. It's like a reminder and I can almost see the yellow flashing arrows pointing at those parts.

As if this wasn't enough other parts of the story raised before me like walls, interrupting the pace and the continuity just to describe an action or a place. So I feel disconnected from the story just because my mind sticks to those parts.

I wonder if it's just me, or if my writing has to do something with that. As if subconsciously I try to decode that book and find out how it was written in an attempt to learn more about the writing process.

But this doesn't happen often and so I wonder if it's just the book. But then again it's a widely known book, loved by so many people so I end up thinking that it's just me.

Oh, I don't know. It is frustrating.

Have you left like this? What do you do when that happens?
Please share your thoughts.

  1. I don't guess I've ever really noticed that particular feeling before. Some writing draws me more into the story instead of feeling like an observer so that could be some of what you mean. There are definitely books that I feel like I'm being told a story instead of experiencing it.

    1. Yes, I know what you mean, I get that too. But I don't really know why I feel like this about this particular book. Maybe I need to keep reading and we'll see!:)
      Thanks for stopping by, Jaclyn.

  2. Yeah, that happens to me sometimes, too, Athina, and like you it just takes me right out of the story and into textual analysis mode. If the writing suddenly makes me aware that I'm reading fiction, it feels like the story failed me a little somehow. I want to be completely immersed in the story while reading, and when I finish a book I like to feel as if I've been traveling in a different world alongside new friends (or enemies.)
    Have a wonderful Wednesday!

    1. I'm so relieved that I'm not alone! That textual analysis, like you said, is killing me! It's like I can't turn off my mind and enjoy the book.

So cheers to the books that make us travel in a different world alongside new friends (or enemies.) :D

      Happy Wednesday, Lexxie!
