QUESTION OF THE WEEK: How do you handle a book you don't like? Do you DNF or do you power through?

That’s an easy question. I power through.

I don’t know why, but it's so hard to leave a book unfinished. I want to know what is going to happen. I want to see the story moving on, I want to know the ending. I understand it is hard to read something you don’t like, but how can I decide if I like it or not, unless I have finished it?

Sometimes a book starts and I’m not that impressed, but this isn’t a reason to toss it aside and move on to the next. I'll give it time. This is how it works for me.

As a writer, reading a book is like studying and if it’s not a good one, I try to find what went wrong. What I didn’t like, what other people didn’t like. I believe can learn something from every book. Either it is good or bad. So I power through and I enjoy it every time because when I’m done, I’ll have learn something new. Isn't this a good reason to power through?

How about you? DNF or power through? Feel free to share your thoughts.

Have a great weekend and an amazing month. It’s August!

  2. Nice answer! I generally do power through my reads. I think I've only DNF maybe 3 books because I just could not keep focus, or the pacing was dreadful or the characters just weren't connecting for me. There were factors. I'm not proud or even happy to DNF a book, but it happens. Only rarely. Like less than a blue moon!

    Here's my Follow Friday

I think I just learnt something from these words. I've only DNF'd two books. One of them the pacing was too slow for me and about 120 pages in I still didn't understand what was happening. The other one had the MC rambling, and I felt like I was reading someone's thought instead of fiction. I feel bad when I DNF a book, which is why I don't write a review on them or give them one star rating. I think if I didn't finish a book, then I'm not supposed to review it.

Great FF, Athina. By the way, I just finished the first draft of my project this morning. 82,000 words approximately, although my target was 75,000.

I'll be back on Feature and Follow Fridays next week. :)

    Have a wonderful weekend! :)

    1. Thanks, Kaykay.
Congrats for the new project!! I wish you the best. I think 82,000 words are really good for a novel. Don't forget that when editing comes, anything can happen.:)

      Have a wonderful week.

  4. I knew you were going to say you don't quit. I can't power through like you, not since school and school was a while ago! I am powering through my current read because I love the author so much but he keeps talking about a subject matter that turns my brain off. I never thought about trying to learn from a less than stellar read. I'm too busy running to the next one to get my fix. Hmm. Pretty cool about Kaykay finishing his first draft. Have a great week, Athina.

    1. Hmm, am I predictable? hehe :)

You say you don't power through, but you do now. So it counts. :)
I know it's hard to read something that it just isn't for you. Maybe the day will come that I won't be able to power through too. So far though, powering through is helpfull in many ways.

Yes, pretty cool he finished his first draft so fast. I wish him the best.

  5. I tend to power through, too, especially if I bought the book or was given it as a gift. If I checked it out from the library, though, I'm more likely to DNF it if it's simply not clicking with me...

    1. Yes, you're right. It's bad to DNF a book you've already bought or it was a gift.
      Thanks for stopping by. :)
